In the western part of Kagawa Prefecture, high atop Mount Inazumi, lies Takaya Shrine (高屋神社), a historic Shinto shrine that has recently become a sensational tourist spot. While its formal name is Takaya Shrine, its main attraction has earned it the popular nickname, the "Torii in the Sky" (Tenku no Torii). This shrine offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in all of Shikoku.

A Gateway to Heaven

The most striking feature of Takaya Shrine is the large stone torii (shrine gate) located at its Hon-gū (Main Shrine) on the summit of the mountain. Perched at an elevation of 404 meters, the view from this gate is absolutely spectacular.

The torii perfectly frames the cityscape of Kanonji below and the vast, majestic expanse of the Seto Inland Sea beyond. This breathtaking scenery, which blends the sacred structure of the gate with the boundless natural beauty of the sea and sky, has made it a favorite spot for photographers and visitors seeking unforgettable views. It has also been selected as one of the Shikoku 88 Landscapes.

The Climb and the Spiritual Experience

The shrine is divided into the Hon-gū on the summit and the Shimo-gū (Lower Shrine) at the foot of the mountain. For the adventurous traveler, the journey from the Shimo-gū to the summit is a rewarding experience. The path includes 270 steep stone steps, and the total climb takes approximately 40 to 50 minutes on foot.

While challenging, the reward is well worth the effort. The powerful and serene atmosphere at the top, coupled with the incredible view, offers a sense of accomplishment and a moment of true spiritual reflection. If walking is not an option, the shrine is accessible by a narrow mountain road (often regulated on weekends and holidays with a shuttle bus service) to a parking area near the top.

Takaya Shrine is a truly unique destination that combines history, spiritual tradition, and world-class natural beauty, making it an essential stop on any Shikoku itinerary.
